Kristoddie Woods Named All-State Honorable Mention Linebacker by Associated Press

(Dec 17, 2009)  The 2009 Class 5A All-State high school football team, was released Thursday, December 17th as voted on by The Associated Press Sports Editors based on regular-season performance. The Lakeview Centennial Patriots own, Kristoddie Woods, was selected to the all-state roster as Honorable Mention Linebacker.
Woods, a junior at Lakeview, had an outstanding season at middle linebacker.  He was the Patriots leading tackler, and ranked 12th in the state among 5A defensive players according to the Texas High School Coaches Pressbox website.  His ability to make plays helped the Patriots to a number 8 ranking among DFW area 5A teams, giving up less than 279 yards per game.  At 6 feet tall and 220 lbs with 4.6 speed, Kristoddie is already the prototype for inside linebacker.  He continues to work hard and focus his off-season efforts on gaining additional speed and strength. He is expected to have an even more dominant season as a senior in 2010.  Please congratulate Kristoddie on his well-deserved recognition.

Patriots Look forward to 2010 - The NEW VIEW

(Nov 7, 2009)  The Lakeview Patriots football team will look to upgrade their non-district competition next season in an effort to ensure they are battle tested and ready for action in a tough and competitive district 10-5A next year.  They plan to open the 2010 season with Plano on Friday August 27th. Plano (District 8-5A) has an outstanding football program and consistently make the playoffs.  The Patriots will meet Sulphur Springs the following week, September 3, 2009 at HBJ Stadium. Sulphur Springs was the 2008 season 4A Division II State Champion and is poised to make another long playoff run this year.    The third game of the 2010 season is still to be determined, but will be followed by the Patriots old rival, West Mesquite.  The Wranglers have a very competitive program and are consistent participants in post-season play.  They also provide a great border rivalry for Lakeview.  The new schedule will make for a much tougher pre-district line-up, but will help to ensure that the 2010 Patriots are tested and prepared when district play begins.  The Patriots are excited about the upcoming challenge and will go to work immediately preparing for battle.  Priority one is to get bigger, faster and stronger in the off-season, and to develop the mental and physical toughness and commitment needed to achieve their new goals.  Patriot fans should be in for a treat next season, and there are lots of opportunities for fans to get involved.  The Patriots need fans and supporters who can help with pre-game meals, game-day spirit works & spirit tunnel set-up, fund-raisers, 7on7 and lineman challenge staff & help, parent & family nights, college recruiting events, powder-puff tournament, lift-a-thon, spring football game, off-season camps & community kids camps, etc.  For more infomation about how to get involved, contact the coaches office at the number above, and plan to attend the next booster club meeting.  Help support your Patriots and start doing your part to create The New View!

Patriots vs North Garland to Finish Season

(Oct 30, 2009)  The Lakeview Patriots football team will finish the 2009 season this Friday night, November 6th, when they travel to Williams Stadium in Garland to take on the North Garland Raiders at 7:30pm. After beginning the season with a 3-0 record, the Patriots have struggled throughout district play.  While they fell short of their goals to compete for the district title and for a playoff berth, they have still had some note-worthy achievements along the way.

Running back, Paul Hogg broke the 1000 yard rushing barrier.  He now has 1027 yards rushing, and averages over 6 yards per carry with one game remaining.  He is currently ranked 7th among DFW area 5A rushers, and 5th & 7th overall on the THSCA Pressbox Stats list for all purpose yards and yards rushing.  QB, Davonte Black has thrown for 1230 yards and rushed for an additional 518 yards and a total of 11 touchdowns.  Blacks 66 points places him in the area top 20 for scoring, and 10th for passing yards on THSCA Pressbox.  Wide receivers Franklin Nworji, Brandon Hobdy and Desmond Jones have provided a strong triple threat in the passing game and combined to average almost 150 yards receiving per game.  The Patriot offense is averaging 320 total yards per game.

The Patriot defense has been outstanding, giving up an average of only 272 yards per game, which places them 9th in the area for team defense.  Linebacker, Ryan Conley leads the team with 5 sacks, putting him in a 4 way tie for 2nd according to Pressbox.  Andre Eguavoen and Kirwyn Moncriffe are also in the top 10 for sacks with 4 each.  Ryan Conley and Kristoddie Woods are number 1 and 2 in the state in total tackles.  THSCA Pressbox.  shows Conley leading the way with 127 and Woods has 103.  Defensive End, Keandra Whitlock is 15th overall with 75 tackles through 8 games.

The Patriots will look to finish their season next Friday on a positive note, and send their seniors off with a victory over North Garland.  It will not be an easy task as North Garland is currently 2nd in the district standings and still very much in the playoff hunt.  Their QB, Anthony McGhee leads a potent running attack, and they have a talented and aggressive defense.  The Patriots have the talent and ability to win, but will need all parts working together to bring home the victory.  Plan to be there for a great season finale' - Friday, November 6th at 7:30pm at Williams Stadium.  Make the most of the last opportunity in 2009 to cheer for your Patriots!!!  Goooo PATRIOTS!!!!

Patriots Playoff Hunt ends in 21-34 Loss to Sachse

(Oct 22, 2009)  The Lakeview Patriots football team had been in a slump after starting the season 3-0, they dropped their first 3 district games to go 0-3 in district 10-5A.  Even so, they still had high hopes and a legitimate shot at one of the district's playoff berths going into last Thursday night's game against the Sachse Mustangs.  If the Patriots could win three in a row to finish the season, a playoff spot would be theirs.  Unfortunately, Sachse had other plans.  Sachse too is in search of a playoff spot, and both teams came into the game desparately needing a win.

Sachse dominated the first quarter, going up 14-0 behind a strong running attack, and two Patriot misques.  Lakeview had a muffed punt, and a costly fumble on their own 20 yard line.  Both resulted in Sachse touchdowns.  Lakeview bounced back in the second quarter, pulling to within a touchdown on an 8 yard score by Paul Hogg.  The point after attempt was blocked, and the half ended 14-6.  Lakeview tied it up in the 3rd quarter on a TD pass from Davonte Black to Desmond Jones.  On the PAT, Black threw a quick screen to Brandon Hobdy, who stretch the ball just over the goal line for the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14.  Sachse answered with a TD pass late in the 3rd quarter, and another run for a TD early in the 4th to take another 14 point lead.  Lakeview answered again, with a 22 yard TD pass from Black to wide out, Brandon Hobdy to pull with 7, but it would not be enough.  Sachse would score again in the 4th to go up 34-21.  The game ended with Lakeview driving 78 yards deep into Sachse territory, but they ran out of time and could not overcome the deficit.

The loss ended the Patriots' hopes of reaching the playoffs this season.  They will look to finish strong with two games remaining against Rowlett and North Garland.  They will take on Rowlett this Thursday night at HBJ stadium.  Patriot fans are encouraged to come out and support your team and help finish the season with a bang.  We also want to remind you that this game has been designated "SENIOR NIGHT".  It will be the final home game for our senior Patriots.  Be sure to be at the game to help pay tribute to our graduating seniors and help send them off in style.  Goooooo PATRIOTS!!!

Patriots Look Flat - Fall to Garland

(Oct 1, 2009)   After a tough loss to Naaman Forest the previous week, in a game where the Patriots looked very sharp for much the contest, Lakeview was anything but sharp at Williams Stadium on Oct, 1st.  The game was originally scheduled for 7:00pm, but a long lightening delay pushed the start time to almost 9:00pm.  When the game finally kicked off, it became obvious that the Patriot offense was not hitting on all cylinders.  After a 3 and out on the first possession, Lakeview put together a 15 play drive that took them inside the Garland 25 yardline, but a bad snap pushed them out of field goal range and the drive ended with no points on the board.  That would be the theme for the evening.  False starts, poorly thrown and/or dropped passes, missed blocks and interceptions snowballed and the Patriots were unable to snap out of their funk against a very good Garland team.  After averaging over 415 yards and almost 30 points in their first 5 games, the Patriot offense managed only 174 total yards and no points.
The Patriot defense played their normal brand of tough, attacking defense and held the Owls to only 27 yards rushing.  They struggled and fought to defend a short field for much of the contest, with 14 of Garland's 38 points coming as a direct result of Lakeview turnovers and another 14 on a blocked punt and kickoff return.  Garland did manage to one long pass for a TD to Adrian Phillips (committed to Univ of TX). Garland finished with 205 yards passing for a total of 232.
The Patriots will need to refocus and find a way back to their early season form in order to compete in a very competitive district 10-5A.  The district seems to be wide open with Sachse beating former district favorite Naaman Forest and North Garland upsetting Rowlett.  Up next for the Patriots, South Garland - coming off a 17-10 victory over North Mesquite. The game is scheduled for 7:00pm this Thursday, October 8th at HBJ stadium. Patriot Fans, make plans to be there this Thursday night at 7:00pm to help cheer your team to victory! Gooooo Patriots!!!!!.

Patriots Take Lead into 4th Qtr, but fall to Naaman

(Sep 25, 2009)   The Patriots opened the game with a 17 play drive that went 75 yards and took over 8 minutes off the clock.  After what might have been a TD pass from QB, Davonte Black to Iynolu Oguenfeyimi fell incomplete, the Patriots attempted another pass on a bootleg play deep in Naaman territory. Unfortunately, the Ranger defense was waiting and took the interception 90 yards for the first score of the game.  After going down 13-0, the Patriots put together another impressive drive, going 65 yards in 9 plays and scoring on a 5 yard run by Black.  The Patriot defense bottled up the Ranger offense in the 3rd quarter, and the Patriot offense (down by 6), mounted an 11 play drive and took a 14-13 lead on a TD pass from Black to wide out Franklin Nworji.  Drew Fletcher's PAT kick was tipped, but managed to get through the uprights for the one point advantage. In the 4th quarter, the Patriots were plagued with costly turnovers.  After moving the ball down the field into Naaman territory once again, the Patriots fumbled after an 8 yard gain on a bubble screen to give Naaman the ball.  The Rangers capitalized and took a 20-14 lead.  On the ensuing kick-off, the Patriots had another costly fumble, which resulted in a Ranger touchdown.  With only 3 minutes remaining and needing two scores, the Patriots went to a gimmick play, but Paul Hogg's pass attempt to Nworji was picked off by the Ranger Saftey.  The Ranger's capitalized again with the final TD of the game, ending with a score of 34-14.  While the score looks like a comfortable win for Naaman, it was anything but!  The Patriots were able to move the ball very efficiently all evening, converting on 8 of 12 3rd downs.  Paul Hogg had another 100 yard rushing day, and Davonte Black was 11 for 17 for a 65% completion rate.  The Patriot defense held  two of the top rushers in the area in check most of the evening.  Ranger QB, John Harris had only 64 yards.  Ranger RB, Jerome Regal had 123 on the night, but was held to under 75 until a late 4th quarter burst for 50 yards.  Lakeview will need to protect the ball much better to be successful in a tough district 10-5A, but they look to have the tools and the talent to make a legitimate run at the playoffs, and challenge the top teams in the district.  Next up - The Garland Owls.  Patriot Fans, make plans to be at Williams Stadium this Thursday night at 7:00pm to help cheer your team to victory! Gooooo Patriots!!!!!.

Paul Hogg Rushes for 210 in Patriot Loss

(Sep 18, 2009)   Despite holding West Mesquite's talented offense to only 130 rushing yards and 4 for 12 in the passing game, the Patriots were unable to put points on the board in the redzone and suffered their only loss of the season, 15-31 to West Mesquite..  Running back, Paul Hogg rushed for 210 yards (most coming in the 2nd half) and 1 TD to continue his outstanding season performance.  He is currently one of the top 3 rushers in the area - averaging 178 yards per game and an impressive 9.1 yards per carry.  Davonte Black rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries and threw for 136 yards, but was only able to complete 11 of 29 for 1 TD.  Brandon Hobdy and Frank Nworji were the leading receivers on the day.  Hobdy caught 5 for 58 yards and Nworji caught 4 for 69 and a touchdown.  Ryan Conley was the leading tackler for the Lakeview defense with 12 total tackles.  Chris Haynes and Kristoddie Woods both had double digit tackles as well, with 10 each.  Lakeview's offense had 432 total yards and 20 first downs, while West Mesquite had a total of 302 yards and 14 first downs.  However, penalties, a crucial fumble and misqueues in the redzone kept the Patriots out of the endzone and resulted in a disappointing loss to the Wranglers.  Lakeview will look to get back on track and continue their success as they prepare to begin district play this week against Naaman Forest.  Lakeview and Naaman will both enter the game 3-1 on the season as the Rangers also suffered their first loss last week to Plano West.  As always, Patriot fans are encouraged to come out to HBJ stadium this Thursday night at 7:00pm to help cheer the Patriots on to Victory!  Gooooo Patriots!!!!!

Patriots Go 3-0 With 45-28 Victory over WT White

(Sep 12, 2009)   Due to a lightening delay, the Lakeview Centennial Patriots Varsity Football team was forced to wait an extra one and a half hours inside Loos Athletic Complex before taking the field at 9:00pm under a light, but steady drizzling rain against W.T. White last Friday at Couch Stadium. Although the field was equipped with synthetic turf, the wet conditions still made for very slippery playing conditions.  In all, there were 12 fumbles between the two teams, and a number of phantom tackles caused by poor footing.
After taking an early 14 point lead on a 4 yard run by Paul Hogg and a 25 yard pass form Davonte Black to Franklin Nworji, the Patriots fumbled on a kick return that resulted in 7 points for the Longhorns, followed by an intercepted screen pass for a touchdown to tie the game with less than 2 minutes left in the first half.  The Patriots responded by putting together a 70 yard drive which included a 26 yard pass to Franklin Nworji and then 42 yard bomb to Brandon Hobdy to take the Patriots to the Longhorn 16 yard line.  Drew Fletcher came on and kicked the 33 yard field goal to give the Patriots a 3 point half-time lead as time expired in the 2nd quarter.
The Patriots were able to regroup at half-time, and came out fired up in the 3rd quarter.  After the defense stiffled the Longhorns on their first possession, the Patriot offense put together a 70 yard drive ending with Davonte Black scrambling for 33 yards and a touchdown.  Turnovers continued to plague the Patriots, and the Longhorns scored after an unfortunate fumble.  Again, the Patriot offense bounced back with three more TD's in the second half.  Franklin Nworji scored his second on the night when he caught a 40 yard strike from Black on a play-action pass.  In the 4th quarter, Black hit Iyinolu Ogunfeyimi on a 21 yard TD pass, and then finished the scoring with a 10 yard run for his second rushing TD on the evening and his 10th on the season.

The turnovers were a big problem, but statistically, the Patriots had a very impressive game, racking up over 479 yards of total offense while allowing the Longhorns only 237.  Paul Hogg was a work horse, carrying the ball 20 times for 237 rushing yards and the games first TD.  Franklin Nworji had a big night with 91 yards receiving and 2 TD's on 3 receptions.  Iyinolu Ogunfeyimi had 4 catches for 44 yards and a TD.  Davonte Black rushed for 2 TD's and threw for 3 more.  Brandon Hobdy was limited to one reception on the evening, but his crucial 42 yard reception allowed the Patriots to regain the lead just before the half.  Iyinolu Ogunfeyimi also had a huge night blocking, and was the games pancake leader.

Defensively, Ryan Conley was the leading tackler with 14 total tackles including 1 QB sack, 2 tackles for losses, 1 caused fumble and a big hit.  Five additional Patriots finished the night with double digit tackles.  These include Chris Haynes(11), Osayuki Eguavoen(11), Kristoddie Woods(11), Jarrell Williams(11) and Kirwyn Moncriffe(10).  To see and print all the Box Scores and Season Stats click on the STATS link in the menu bar at the top of this screen.
Next week, the Patriots will take on West Mesquite on Friday, September 18th at 7:30pm at Garland's HBJ Stadium.  This game is designated as the official homecoming game for the 2009 season.  All Patriot fans and alumni are encouraged to attend, and help cheer your Patriots on to Victory.  Come out and help them go 4-0 and stay undefeated on the season.  Goooooooooo Patriots!!!

Patriots Win in OT 28-21 to Open Season 2-0

(Sep 5, 2009)   The Lakeview Centennial Patriots hosted McKinney North last Friday at HBJ Stadium.  They took the field looking for a second straight victory to open the 2009 season, but things did not start well.  After a costly mistake on the opening kick-off return, the Patriots found themselves pinned inside their own 10 yard line.  Unable to move the ball, they were forced to punt.  The punt was blocked and the Bulldogs scooped and scored for an early 1st quarter lead.  The Patriots worked back and tied it at 7 all, but late in the 2nd quarter another costly turnover gave McKinney a 14-7 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Patriots were not to me denied.  They came out and got a quick stop on defense, then immediately marched down the field and tied the game when Davonte Black connected on a fade route to Brandon Hobdy.  Later in the 4th quarter, Black would put the Patriots ahead 21-14 with a 5 yard scamper over the right side.  The Bulldogs did not go easily.  After another turnover on a Lakeview drive deep into bulldog territory, McKinney running back, Devon Smith broke fee on a 20 yard run to the endzone.  The game was tied once again.
Lakeview mounted one last drive in regulation, and attempted a 45 yard field goal with 5 seconds left in the game.  The kick by Drew Fletcher had the distance, but was just inches wide, forcing the overtime.
In overtime, the Patriots had the ball first and started with a penalty that put them in a long yardage situation.  Quarterback, Davonte Black was able to hit TE/WR, Iyinolu "O.G." Ogunfeyimi on a guick pass over the middle.  O.G. gashed the Bulldog defense for 29 yards to give the Patriots a first and goal on the 2 yard line.  Black took the snap and powered up the middle for the TD, and Fletcher's kick gave the Patriots a 7 point lead, but the Bulldogs had one more shot.  The Patriot defense rose to the challenge, and shut out the McKinney offense in overtime to preserve the 28-21 win.
Defensively, LB Kristoddie Woods had an outstanding performance with 24 total tackles including 12 unassisted, 2 QB sacks, 5 more tackles for losses, a fumble recovery and a big hit.  Davonte Black continued his scoring frenzy, rushing for 3 TD's and throwing for a 4th.  He now leads all area 5A players in points scored with 8 TD's on the young season.  Paul Hogg turned in another hard day's work with 94 yard rushing and 50 receiving.  Brandon Hobdy was the leading receiver with 4 catches and 52 yards.  Franklin Nworji, Desmond Jones and Iyinolu Ogunfeyimi all had big catches in the game.  Ryan Conley also had an outstanding performance on defense with 22 total tackles, 1 for a loss and 1 big hit.  Four other Patriot defenders finished with double digit tackles including Denzil Grundy(18), Keandra Whitlock(14), Kirwyn Moncriffe(13), and Jerrell Williams(10).  Valerian Ume-Ezeoke was the teams leading offensive lineman with 4 pancackes, and 80% blocking proficiency.
Penalties and mistakes made it a very close game, but the Patriots battled till the end and won the victory.  They will look to improve and stay undefeated next Friday at Couch Stadium in Dallas' Loos Athletic Complex.  They will be taking on the W.T. White Longhorns at 7:30pm.  Lakeview fans come out and cheer your Patriots on to VICTORY!!!

Patriots Varsity Opens with 42-10 Victory Over Frisco
JV and Freshmen also get wins to open the season

(Aug  30, 2009)   The Lakeview Centennial Patriots Varsity Football team opened its season last Friday night against Frisco High School at Frisco's Pizza Hut Park.  After taking their opening possession into Frisco territory, a costly penalty and a bad snap on a punt attempt gave Frisco the ball deep in Patriots' redzone territory.  Much like last season, the Patriot defense rose to the challenge and held Frisco to only a field goal.  From that point on, it was Lakeview's night.  Lakeview would score on each of its next four possessions to finish the first half.  In the second half, it was more of the same, with the Patriots controlling the ball most of the second half.  Davonte Black would score his 5th TD of the evening in the 3rd quarter on a 5 yard run.  Paul Hogg topped off the evening with a 1 yard run for Lakeview's 6th TD of the night.  Kicker, Andrew Fletcher was a perfect 6 of 6 on PAT's giving the Patriots 42 total points.  Black left the game early in the 4th quarter with 128 yards rushing on 12 carries, and 13 for 18 passing for 148 yards in the air.  Paul Hogg finished the game with 174 yards rushing on 18 carries. and Jamil Mallory added 30 yards on 6 carries.  Desmond Jones led all receivers with 5 catches for 67 yards.  Brandon Hobdy had 2 for 28, Frank Nworji was 1 for 24, and Iyinolu Ogunfeyimi had 4 for 17 yards.  Ryan Conley led the Lakeview defense with 16 total tackles, a big hit, a QB sack and another tackle for a loss.  Kristoddie Woods had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, followed by Keandra Whitlock and Jarrell Williams with 9 tackles each.  Robert Charles finished the night with 7 tackles and a pass deflection.  Emenya Etiobhio had 6 tackles which included 3 tackles for losses.  In the final team tally, Lakeview finished with 510 yards of total offense, with 23 first downs and 42 points.  Defensively, they held Frisco to only 152 total yards and 10 points.  It was a great start to a promising season.
Lakeview will be back in action this Friday at HBJ stadium in Garland where they will take on McKinney North High School at 7:30pm.  Patriot fans should make plans now to come out and support your Patriots as they look to go 2-0 against the Bulldogs.  Goooooo PATRIOTS

The JV and Freshman teams also opened this week on Thursday night against Frisco High School.  The freshmen set the pace, winning their game by a margin of 19-6.  The JV followed with a tough 2-0 victory.  It was a hard fought battle with the only score of the game coming on a Lakeview defensive safety.   The JV and Freshmen will play again this coming Thursday, Sep 3rd at McKinney North High School.  The Freshmen are scheduled to play at 5:30pm followed by the JV at 7:00pm.

Patriots Welcome New Coaches to Staff

(July 28, 2009)   During the summer off-season, the Patriots have added three new coaches and a certified athletic trainer to the staff.  Former Patriot Athletic Trainer, Bill Anderson accepted a position as the Head Athletic Trainer at Kilgore College.  The Patriots wish him continued success in his new position.  Fortunately, Carrol "Doc" Montgomery has agreed to join the Patriot staff.  Doc was with us for five weeks last spring during Coach Anderson's absence for Paternity leave, and did a wonderful job.  Doc has over 40 years of experience as a trainer in athletics.  His wisdom from experience coupled with his outstanding attitude and work ethic will be a huge plus for the Patriots. We're happy to have Doc on board full-time, and look forward to working with him.
Former Patriots' head baseball coach, Rene Cordova also left to take a position as Head Baseball Coach in Willis, Texas.  Coach Cordova directed the Patriots baseball team to playoff appearances 2 of the last 3 seasons, and we will miss him.  However, new Head Baseball Coach James Boxley, is a great addition to the Lakeview Staff.  Coach Boxley was formerly the Head Baseball Coach at Forney High School, where he was selected as the District 15-4A coach of the year for 2009, and his teams have been in the play-offs 6 of the last 9 seasons. Coach Boxley was also selected district coach of the year for 2004 and 2001, and All-Herald Press Area Coach of the Year for 2001.  His teams have finished as Region Quarter-Finalists, Region Semi-Finalists, Region Finalists and in 2004, 3A State-Finalists. In addition to his baseball responsibilities, Coach Boxley coached Varsity Linebackers and Running Backs.  We are very happy to have Coach Boxley on Board as our new Head Varsity Baseball Coach.  In light of his extensive experience, Coach Boxley, will also take on the responsibility of Head Freshman Football Coach.
Two other additions to the Patriot Coaching Staff include Coach Gary Carpenter and Coach Lonnie Griggs.  Coach Carpenter will be an assistant varsity defensive coach.  He comes to us from Lubbuck High School where he coached varsity secondary and receivers and was involved in developing and implementing the strength and conditioning program.  Prior to his experience at Lubbuck H.S., Coach Carpenter was an assistant coach at Missouri Southern State University and a graduate assistant coach at Texas Tech University.
Coach Lonnie Griggs will be our new vasity running backs coach.  Coach Griggs comes to us from Irving Nimitz High School where he coached running backs, and was also a JV baseball coach.  Prior to his experience at Irving Nimitz, Coach Griggs coached varsity football and track at Arlington Sam Houston High School, and football, power-lifting, basketball and track at Wichita Falls Hirschi high school.  Coach Griggs has lots of energy and enthusiasm and will be a great addition to our program.
We hope that all the Patiot fans will make a point to meet our new coaches, and help welcome them to the Patriot family.

John Harwell Named Most Valuable Lineman
at Tennessee Vols Camp
Article Republished Courtesy of VolQuest.com Senior Writer John Brice

(Jun 29, 2009)   Bloodied but undeterred, John Harwell didn't let up during Tennessee's overnight football camp earlier this month even as a gash above his right eye poured blood across his face.

Instead the 6-foot-4-inch, 280-pound offensive lineman from Lakeview Centennial High School in the Dallas suburb of Garland kept powering his opposition into the turf. The end result was a dominating performance in the Vols' camp, an MVP award in the lineman division and some continued recruiting interest from Tennessee -- which just happens to be Harwell's childhood favorite team.

"What happened was we were doing one-on-ones and we started off doing these drills, and I came up with this one guy," Harwell said. "He drove in and I drove with him and started taking him to the ground. His head rolls up and cuts my eye, split it open, and it began to bleed from my forehead down to my cheeks. We kept going, and I did the same thing to him again but didn't cut my other eye. I was lucky then. The coaches said I may need to get stitches. They wanted me to sit out, and I was like 'Nah, I can't do that.' I got it cleaned up, went back outside and did what every other football player would've done."

Except that Harwell acknowledged his performance likely surged once he noticed the blood from the gash, which had plastic steri-strips on it as he made the 12-hour drive home.  "When you get that blood on your face, it's like an animal unleashed in you," said Harwell, an guard and center. "It's like a whole other person in you. You become bad, makes you work harder and everything."
Hard work is the theme for the remainder of Harwell's summer and his senior season. Currently being recruited by the Vols, Vanderbilt, North Texas and the two main Iowa schools, he's got a connection to the Volunteer State and grew up following the Vols. Harwell said he drove roughly 11 hours en route to the Vols' camp and stayed a few days with his grandmother in Lewisburg not quite 60 miles south of Nashville. He then continued on to Knoxville.

"I've always liked Tennessee since I was little; that's been my school I wanted to attend," Harwell explained. "When I went there and they first started to recruit me, which I was baffled by it, and when I went there and saw all the things they had, the stadium When I walked into that stadium it was something else. You get an energy off that stadium alone. And then to think you can feel that vibe of 109,000 fans screaming for the team you play.

"It was a neat experience to do all that. To get a little taste of what college players go through gave us a lot to learn and expect during our senior years."

Encouraged to attend the Vols' camp by UT secondary coach Willie Mack Garza, Harwell made an impression on the school's coaches who said they would remain in contact with him and offered some targeted improvement.

"I know coach Mack Garza said work on my speed and strength and do windsprints," Harwell said. "Coach Garza said, 'Do good your senior year and make sure you keep in touch with me and we're going to have our eyes on you.' I'm going to make sure my senior year is good."

for the State 7on7 Championship tournament by capturing the championship in the Rockwall 7on7 Tuesday-night league on June 30th.  The Patriots began the night in second place, trailing Wylie (the only team in the league to defeat them).  In order to get a rematch and a shot at the league title, the Patriots had to defeat Rowlett in the first game of the evening.  They did just that, jumping out to an early lead and then hanging on for a 40-33 victory to put them in the championship finale'.  Against Wylie, the scoring was slow to begin with, but the first half ended with The View leading 19-12.  The Patriots came out in the second half determined to put the game away.  When the final horn sounded, it was Patriots 37, Wylie 19.  As impressive as the win, were the Patriots statistics for league play.  They lead the league in points scored with 373 total points, and in points allowed, giving up only 152, for an average margin of victory of 46-19.  It appears they are ready and eager to test their metal in College Station in the State Tournament to be held July 10th & 11th on the campus of Texas A&M.  The Patriots seem to have gained a different level of expectation and confidence to go along with their obvious talent.  They look and play like a championship caliber team.  One player was quoted as saying, "It's a new day, and folks had better get used to 'The View"!

this Saturday's 7on7 State Qualifying Tournament at SMU.  The tournament was hosted by Wylie high school on SMU's campus and included 16 teams from the North Texas area.  The teams competing included Rockwall, West Mesquite, Lake Dallas, Lake Highlands, Birdville, Hebron, North Mesquite, Plano, Wylie, South Garland, Jesuit, Grand Prairie, Frisco Liberty, Sherman, Plano West and Lakeview.  The Patriots swept their 4 team pool, going a perfect 3 for 3 against Frisco Liberty (wining by a score of 31-12), Sherman (51-38) and Plano West (34-32).  In the final game of pool play, the Patriots actually trailed Plano West by a score of 26-14 at halftime.  The Patriots came back strong in the second half - scoring three touchdowns and holding Plano West to only 1 score and no extra point conversion.  The victory in Pool play put the Patriots in the semi-final round against the winner of Pool C, Jesuit High School.  The semi-final game started at 2:30pm, and both team showed some fatigue and effects from the heat.  They were tied at 13-13 at halftime, and they were tied again at 26-26 at the end of regulation.  In overtime, Lakview was able to score first and go up by 6, but failed on the extra-point conversion.  On Jesuit's possession, the situation got a bit anxious when the Patriots were called for pass interference, giving Jesuit a 1st down and goal at the 5 yard line.  Two plays later, Ryan Conley came through with a huge interception to seal the victory.  The win moved Lakeview into the Tournament Championship game, but more importantly, secured a berth in the State Championship Tournament to be held on July 10th & 11th at Texas A&M in College Station, TX..
The Patriots were set to play in the final game of the day when their opponent, Birdville, made them a proposition.  Both teams were suffering cramps from the heat, and in the interest of preventing injury, Birdville suggested flipping a coin for the championship, since both teams had already qualified for the State tournament by reaching the final game.  The Patriots agreed, and then won the coin-toss for the Championship.
Lakeview will play in a 7on7 League in Rockwall on Tuesdays in June, and two more qualifying tournaments this summer, on June 20th and 27th.   However, their spot in the State Championship Tournament is already secured, and they are making travel plans for July 10th & 11th.  This will be their 2nd trip to College Station in 3 years.  Last time, they made it into the championship bracket on day one, but had an early exit on day two.  They will look to improve on that performance, and have hopes of bringing home the state title. Great Job Patriots, and Good Luck this summer!

The 7on7 Shoot-out was not a state qualifier, but provided a great warm-up for teams preparing for the summer SQT schedule.  This year's event hosted 8 teams in two pools, with the top team from each pool advancing to the championship game.  Sulpher Springs cruised through Pool A, going undefeated in three games.  In pool B, Lakeview Centennial and Mesquite John Horn both finished with a 2-1 record, but Lakeview advanced by virtue of the first tie-breaker (fewest points allowed).  The Championship game was close, with both teams showing some fatique from the long day in the heat.  With only 4 minutes remaining in the game, Lakeview had the ball with 1st and goal from the 12 yard-line and down by 4 points.  Quarterback Davonte Black, tried to thread the needle to wide-out Franklin Nworji, but a Sulpher Springs defensive back broke in front for the interception.  The clock expired on the Sulpher Springs possession, giving Sulpher Springs the 28-24 victory and the tournament championship.  The Patriots were awarded the runner-up trophy, and possed briefly for a picture before heading off to the pool for a well-deserved cooling off.

Congratulations and thanks to all the teams that competed in this year's event.  It was a great tournament, and all teams represented themselves and their programs well.  The Lakeview Patriots wish you a great summer, and best of luck in the coming 2009 football season..
